Today one of my architecture and design heroes: Buckminster Fuller.
A total visionary, internationally known in the 50’s because of his Geodesic Dome research and development, was a brilliant and inspiring human.
He even fully documented his whole life (every 15 minutes everyday for decades!) in a diary series called Dimaxion Chronofile!

One of my most profound all-time inspirations is the Wiener Werkstätte (Viena Workshop). I love their holistic approach to creativity, the amazing patterns they created, the artisan touch of everything... So contemporary but so ornamental at the same time.
Amazing.

Saw yesterday an interview with Marie-Monique Robin and found it very inspiring, for years this journalist has been researching about transgenic vs. organic and all the paths ended in the same business Monsanto, the transgenics giant. Scary though...

Weeks ago saw “Lynch One” the first of a documentary series created by shooting for 2 years the life of Mr David Lynch.
My boyfriend and I were astonised because of the truly working man is shown on the film.
Lynch is a non-stop omnidirectional artist and craftsman!
I believe in holistic creativity too :)

In the end we didn’t have enough time to do it, so I’m still thinking about doing some kind of mirror compositions for personal use...

Lately with the “recession and crisis thing” I can’t stop listening on the news about how many people without jobs are in this country at the moment...
Definitely capitalism hasn’t worked and new solutions are needed to take our society to a better place, maybe small changes trigger bigger “social revolutions”, and I’m thinking about one little experiment... ( this is just my humble opinion! ;)

What about the government creating organic sustainable vegetable farms and the disemployed people working part time on them to then offer these vegetables at cheaper prices on the market? This way people can have access to high quality organic products without spending too much and lots of job creations would be reached... The agriculture world in Spain is always complaining that they don’t have enough people to recollect apples, oranges, lettuces, whatever...
Do you prefer working on a grey office than open-air surrounded by nature? If your answer is yes, forget about everything that I said before... :/

Two weeks ago I saw Lagerfeld Confidentiel, liked the documentary very much... the character is more similar to Andy Warhol than I previously thought!
Uploaded to YouTube a clip from a Chanel fashion show that really impressed me on the film.
Karl saw it in his dreams, every single detail, then he brought it to reality.

Yesterday we sent the first samples from our handmade designed wallpaper Topo Azul to clients. I’m extremely happy with the finishes and quality after using a first-class ecologic “woven non woven” paper (really easy to apply!). I took some macro pictures from the wallpaper for you to see the amazing slightly irregular texture.
note: the pictures are a little bit dark for you to see the texture... wallpaper background is off-white (not so greyish!).

I believe in “human branding” I don’t believe in “corporate” as we know it anymore. I truly believe in handmade things, in customizing, in DIY aesthetics, in “on demand” production, in human nature at the end... I guess sometimes “perfect factory finishes” are quite boring and dull. That’s why even Pattern Tales® stationary is handmade crafted via block printing!
I pasted below two pictures: golden thank you notes on the left and “Topo Azul” samples on the right.

I feel this is the beginning of a neo-humanism era and a neo-crafting time indeed!
Guess I can only finish this neo-hippy tuesday morning post with this phrase:

How could I’ve lived without seeing this!? OMG!
I’m on an detox ayurvedic diet that is 95% vegan, so I read lots of blogs about vegan food with recipes that are amazing (I’ll post about them soon)... but when I saw these marvellous cute-as-hell-cupcakes on Vegan Yum Yum I fell in love. :)

I wanted to post today a little bit from the new drawings I’ve been doing these days, but my scanner has decided he doesn’t want to work more and all the images are appearing with lots of lines and glitches. :/ So, in the meantime while I buy a new one I’ll talk a little bit about David Lynch.

Last week my boyfriend and I started watching Twin Peaks again, we are total fans (the greatest Lynch masterpiece!).
The series is full of amazing characters, but Agent Dale Cooper is a deeply brilliant one by the zen/positive view of life itself, his intuition and heterodoxal methods he uses to solve the cases and many other things, I think only an awaken spiritual person can communicate this sensation with little details on TV.
Maybe you know how deep is David Lynch into trascendental meditation or maybe not... the video I paste below is an introduction to meditation by him.

While checking the MediaTemple stadistics about Pop Pervert and Alan The Gallant I arrived to The Catalyst a blog by Jenny, a design addict lady based in LA. She posted two pictures from a tarot created on 1970 by David Palladini, these images caught my eye profoundly as I love “the psychedelic era”... the illustrations, the music... ( did I recommend you an amazing psychedelic pop compilation called Hallucinations? it’s been “a must” in my recommended discography for years to get introduced into psych-pop ;)

I’m with so many ideas for projects at the same time that my notebooks and Moleskine-agenda are full of them in no particular order -all messed up- and I’m getting a little paranoid thinking about forgeting/loosing some of them.
As I hope in Christmas time to be more relaxed I programmed this e-mail to be sent to me on that moment to refresh this projects for the new year...

Until now I was doing this kind of things in a more analogic way... letting messages for myself on the pockets of my winter coats and so...

Think I still like it more the analogic way though... but Futureme is a great idea however!

080 Barcelona - Miriam Ocariz exhibition

Yesterday attended to a totally beautiful exhibition for the launch of Barcelona Fashion Week “080 Fashion Barcelona”. The venue was a stunning 15th century palace on calle Montcada (the same street from Picasso’s Museum in touristic Born neighbourhood) that’s called Palau Dalmases. Miriam Ocariz a really talented spanish designer who made an exhibition about her creative process called “From the idea to the runway”.
I loved the place, the installations and the dresses.
Vive la mode! Vive l’art!

I love intimate atmospheric chic post-modern pictures ( trying to explain a sensation with adjectives is sometimes difficult ;) , that’s why I totally love the work of Carlotta Manaigo and Nacho Alegre.
Let me show you some samples:

···Carlotta born and raised in Italy moved to US to study at the Rhode Island School of Design and now she works between the States and Europe doing her precious pictures for fashion editorials and advertisings.

···Nacho is from Barcelona. He shooted a Vitra catalog, a Levi’s catalog, Hercules magazine editorials, but above all of them he has some beautiful photographic diaries with a more personal work. Beautiful.

Gandules 08 looks at the theme of interculturality, taking as its starting point an essential film principle: the viewpoint. In the form of fiction, essay and documentary, the films shown during Gandules 08 present works from the West and beyond which deal with two major themes that question the point of view: journeys that lead to another culture and situations of coexisting cultures in a single place.
Gandules 08 extends this year to provide a space for creation, inviting four young filmmakers to make a short film that dialogue with the programme.

NOTE: All the movies begin at 22:00, free admission (but limited capacity!).

Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Le voyage du ballon rouge / 2007 / 113' In his first film shot in Europe, Hou Hsiao-Hsien tells the story of an actress (Juliette Binoche) who works with a puppet company, a Chinese student in Paris, the little boy she looks after and the imaginary world they share.

Rainer W. Fassbinder, Ali, Fear Eats the Soul / 1974 / 93' Emmi, a 60-year-old widow and cleaner, meets Salem, a 30-year-old Moroccan, in an immigrants' bar. They start going out together, leading to Emmi's rejection by her children, neighbours and colleagues.

**Werner Herzog, Encounters at the End of the World / 2007 / 99'. Spanish premiere!!!!! Herzog travels to one of the Earth's most remote, sparsely populated corners: Antarctica. This is a humanistic, funny and sensitive portrait of one of the last natural reserves. Cultures in a territory without culture.

Wednesday 13 August
Serge-Henri Moati, Les cow-boys sont noirs / 1966 / 15' A taxi-driver, a mechanic and workers film the first African western. Moati filmed the making of this wild and woolly project.
Aki Kaurismaki, La vie de bohème / 1992 / 100' A painter (Rodolfo), a writer (Marcel), a musician (Schaunard) and a dog (Baudelaire) are what remains of Parisian bohemia. They live in poverty but without renouncing their ideals or their friendship-between Boris Vian, Mozart and rock, between comedy and tragedy.

Thursday 14 August
*Lope Serrano, Akemi Negishi / 2008 / 2' A piece of animation featuring the face and body of Akemi Negishi, the actress who plays Keiko in The Saga of Anatahan.
Josef von Sternberg, The Saga of Anatahan / 1953 / 92' A group of shipwrecked Japanese soldiers reach an island that is apparently deserted, but home to a beautiful woman and her husband. The woman awakens the desire of the men, who start competing to win her. When they receive a communiqué informing them of the end of the war and Japan's defeat, they choose to believe it is a trap laid by the enemy and continue their obsessive dispute for Keiko. The camera and voice of Sternberg mark out the rhythm of this mythical film about the men's fascination with the woman.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, The Promise / 1996 / 93' Igor is 15 and apprenticed as a mechanic to his father, who exploits illegal immigrants in exchange for false papers. One day, Igor makes a promise: that he will look after the wife and son of a Ghanaian worker. One of the most realistic and sensitive portraits of immigration in European society.

Bob Connolly, Robin Anderson, Black Harvest / 1992 / 90' Joe, mixed-race son of an Australian gold prospector and an aborigine from New Guinea, sets up a coffee plantation with his step-brothers of the Ganiga tribe. Over a series of years, Connolly and Anderson filmed the thrilling and fascinating story of a project to reconcile two cultures which gradually breaks down. Wednesday 27 August

Octavio Cortázar, Por primera vez / 1966 / 9' The inhabitants of a village in Cuba who have never seen a motion picture discover the cinema with the showing of Chaplin's Modern Times.
Jean Rouch, La pyramide humaine / 1961 / 90' Rouch suggests that a group of European and African students from a school in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) make a film together. This shared cinematographic experience helps them discover a way of expressing their political and sentimental conflicts. A film full of invention, in which the youngsters play themselves in all the fleeting beauty of youth.

Yesterday had the chance to see a classic movie called “Picnic at Hanging Rock”... knew some things about it but was stunned by the cinematography and the overall beauty. Amazing scenes, light games and psychedelic effects.
Felt like watching Sofia Copula's inspiration before making The Virgin Suicides...The soundtrack is mostly pan-pipe music but if they were changed into synths could have been made by Air easily.

A perfect sunday aussie movie.

Yesterday was the first Montjuïc Nit, an Art night at the Montjuïc mountain in Barcelona. About 50 different activities, lots of people and a great warm sunset. We stop-by at Fundació Miró, MNAC (Duchamp+Picabia+Man Ray exhibition) and the Barcelona Etnologic Museum.

2. BEST MEXICAN: new Rosa Mexicano in posh Brickell area, yes its a scene- avoid it during happy hour- but must try the chicken flautas and tortilla soup, órale!

3. BEST VENEZUELAN BREAKFAST: tiny European Bakery on Sunset Blvd...the best desayuno criollo in town (black beans, eggs, shredded cheese and hand made arepa)

4. BEST NON-STOP HARASSING MEAT FEAST: Porçao on Brickell area...don't go if you have heart problems, on a diet or can't take a 3 hour rodizio meal, ask for the picanha, best Brazilian meat.

5. BEST CUBAN SANDWICH: Sergio's on Coral Way...they called it “vaca frita” (fried cow) so yummy and comes with homemade yuca sticks.

6. BEST BURGER: Houston's on Aventura (humongous size, need a bigger mouth just to eat it, yep i ate it all!

7. BEST JUICES: El Palacio de la Fruta on Little Havana....so cheesy, so local, so juicy....try the papaya all natural juice or take home the 1QT exotic fruit salad, una bomba!

8. BEST DINER: yes, we love Jimmy's, so cheap and mix of clientele: policemen, travesties, senior citizens, old-style families, secret lovers, love it! Try the 3 layer banana pancake..hmmm hmmm

9. BEST EDAMAME EVER: Domo Japones on Miami Design District..yes, it's hip and NY pretentious but believe us... the best sauté black edamame with sweet soy and yuzu...

10. BEST BEAR HANGOUT: The Abbey on Miami Beach....a joint, ask for the local organic brewery ones...don't tell “tourists” though, will spoil it and bring white lounge sofas and house music.

If tired of the Miami see-&-be-seen ambiance, just stop at Jimmy´s Eastside Diner on 7201 Biscayne Blvd...a true old fashioned diner experience, and wait gets better...Bee Gees brothers used to have breakfast there almost everyday! (our little secret..shhh)..checkout for the entrance memorabilia, so fun.

My name is Ana Montiel, am 27 and live in Barcelona, I work in different areas such as illustration, pattern design, graphic design, fashion, art, special editorial contents... always trying to keep myself as open to many disciplines as possible, trying new things to reach versatile and different results on my projects.

I write this blog as an inspirational diary, featuring a selection of things that blows my mind. This weblog also works as a showcase of my creative process where I upload drafts, and new ideas that helps me organize during it.

Am the co-founder and creative chief of a studio (together with my super business development partner Alex Bedoya) called Alan the Gallant.
As Alan we offer a wide range of services for art-sensitive companies and people with good taste in general. :)
Before we were known as itte studio, on those days we were working on more corporate projects (you can check them here), now we are more freestyle, experimental and happy. ;)

Also as Alan the Gallant we have created a pattern design brand called Pattern Tales®, created more than 120 different designs for the first volume only!
Now working on several thematic collections for next autumn.. stay tuned*

ATG is also launching a new e-shop called Gallant Tales to bring you fantastic and beautiful all-kind-of-things... from artist prints to doggy t-shirts. Years ago, I was the 50% of Colectivo Koleko and won 2 art prizes, produced several exhibitions and had a great time.

brrrrr... Totally addicted to the newest Architecture in Helsinki EP “Like it or not”.
To me sounds likeTalking Heads in el caribe or Arcade Fire suffering from jungle fever... well, maybe my brain is suffering calypso fever with such a hot weather in Barcelona... :D

On the same EP there’s a weirdo latin remix by El Guincho... azucar!!

Totally recommended!

Tonight I’m attending a Great Italian Opera Night at Palau de la Música Catalana -a stunning concert hall modernista designed by Domènech i Montaner between 1905-08-.
