Healing drawings by Emma Kunz

Since I first saw an Emma Kunz drawing I became
instantly captivated. They are soooo my type.
Gradients of colours and lines creating
spirograph-like shapes, all of them dancing on
top of “vintage” grid paper... Gorgeous.
But Kunz’s art went beyond all this. She was a healer, and these new-wave-geometric-mandalas were one of her tools to help people.
There is a monograph book about her in which I’ll invest sooner or later. You can buy it here.

I’d love to have some of these green and grey hexagons on our living room!
Our cat would enjoy them as well... ;)

I’m captivated by the beauty of this illustration by Valerie Pensworth.
The vintage mood, the warm expressions, the colour palettes.
Delightful.

I’m loving their “DADA” collection for the upcoming Fall-Winter!
Love those sweaters with flower patterned areas! They have a mantón de manila mood :)
And how cool are these knitted mittens and hat? Oh I want them badly!

15 Books
03/08/09 19:38 Filed in: mix | POP PERVERT
Books time again!!
I’ve been tagged on Facebook by Mr. Duglas T. Stewart (talented soul behind BMX Bandits) to list 15 books in less than 15 minutes that will always stick with me.
Here’s my list, let’s see... some of them are not novels but instead consult books, essays, etc. The information in them is sticking with me much more than any story on a novel :)
"L.S.D : Flashbacks" Timothy Leary’s autobiography.
Leary's life is one of the most inspiring stories I've ever read.
"Design as Art" by Bruno Munari.
Inspiring reflexions on diferent subjects. I love his description of a traditional japanese house.
"The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. A comprehensive guide to the ancient healing of India" by Vasant Lad.
Essential at home! A great source of natural remedies and practical ancient indian medicinal tips.
"No one belongs here more than you" by Miranda July.
Her short stories have a unique sensibility... If you liked her movie you are going to love this book!
"Complete prose of Woody Allen" by Woody Allen.
I've read all his books, I love them all. His delirious sense of humour drives me crazy.
"La Danza de la Realidad" Alejandro Jodorowsky’s autobiography.
Jodo could say "been there, done that" about almost everything... his meetings with André Breton made me laugh out loud.
"The Artist’s Way. A spiritual path to higher creativity” by Julia Cameron.
A guide to the path of healthy, spiritual creativity. Even Martin Scorsese practices it!
"Roman by Polanski" Autobiography by Roman Polanski.
This book is addictive. Roman is a total survivor, to the holocaust, Hollywood, Manson...
"I Ching" Richard Wilhelm.
My favourite oracle.
"The Perfume" Patrick Suskind.
Read it when I was a teenager and since then the appreciation of my olfactive environment changed.
"Cien años de soledad" by Gabriel García Marquez.
Also one of my “teenager hits”... It's still fresh on my mind the magical reality captured on this book.
"Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the 20th Century" by Greil Marcus.
Internationale Situationiste, Dada and Punk in the same book written by one of the most talented music-oriented authors.
"Kink: An Autobiography" Dave Davies.
I laughed so much reading stories from the rise and fall from The Kinks...
"Catching the big fish. Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity" by David Lynch.
I recommend the audiobook version of this one, is like a conversation with David Lynch himself. Truly inspiring!!
"Veganomicon" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero.
My first official vegan book! Full of delicious recipes with no animal traces.

I'm enjoying so much this book by Miranda July
that I wanted to share it with you.
Her short stories have the kind of strange and abstract sense of humour that I like most. Last night was really late when I was reading in bed and I couldn't control myself from laughing out loud with the first part of "Ten True Things".
Hope Ms. July doesn’t get upset as I'll reproduce below the first half page of this story...
~TEN TRUE THINGS~
Some of those women are really good sewers and you wonder, Why are the taking a beginning sewing class? I like to think it's because they have low self-esteem. They seem totally in control and born to make the rest of us feel clumsy, but inside, they have an almost psychotically warped vision of themselves. At least I am in touch with my skill level. I am a really bad sewer. Interestingly, though, I am not the worst in the class; the tiny Asian woman next to me is. I was sure she would be a really good sewer because most of the clothes in the world are made by Asian women, and also, who's going to be better at making a kimono, me or someone who is Chines or Japanese. Boy, did she teach me a thing or two about racial prejudice. Is she even trying to make a kimono-style robe, or does she think we are making dog beds? I used to get incredibly distracted by her; I was just so amazed at her interpretation of the directions. Like the teacher would say, Trim the excess cloth, and the woman would carefully fold here pink flannel in half, pin it, and then sit back, waiting for the next instruction. What happens when you do the exact opposite of everything you are told of? How would she know when she was done? And shy wasn't anyone doing anything about this? Should I do something? What should I do? But then one day the teacher came around and told me to rip out my last five seams and I wanted to yell, My Seams? At least my seams are for bipeds, what about her last five seams? ...

VA : Legends of Benin
This record makes me want to dance like crazy! The songs from this Analog Africa compilation were recorded between 1969-1981 and composed by four legend beninese musicians. Great for the summer!

-------------------------------------------------------------

London’s most promising garage/psych/BeatHappening band at the moment! Love it!

-------------------------------------------------------------
R. Stevie Moore : We are not just anybody
This debut album by the father of DIY music is a total lo-fi jewel.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Dum Dum Girls : We are not just anybody
More lo-fi. This time made by a girl. Absolutely recommended if you like Black Tambourine, Talulah Gosh, Jesus and Mary Chain, Marine Girls...

-------------------------------------------------------------

Album by sisters Diane Rovell and Marilyn Wilson produced and co-composed by Brian Wilson (then Marilyn’s husband). The song “Falling in Love” it’s so beautiful that makes sigh always.

Another great compilation, this time on early jamaican music (with a strong cuban mood on it!).

-------------------------------------------------------------
The B-52’s : The B-52’s + Wild Planet
One of my favourite bands ever. Essential for party time.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Oscar Peterson & Fred Astaire : Complete Norman Granz Sessions
It’s been also a jazzy month... I’ve listened a lot to Peterson & Astaire, Anita O’Day, Ella & Louis, Django & Stephane, Miles... Relaxed summer nights with jazz music are even better!
